Making a claim?

1. Get people to safety

Switch off your engine and turn on your hazard lights. Ensure you’re in a safe location before leaving your vehicle. If passengers can move on their own, guide them to the roadside. Getting out of the traffic is the top safety priority – move to a safe spot away from the highway if it’s possible to do so.

2. Is anyone injured?

If someone cannot move, talk or is in distress or discomfort, call emergency services immediately.

3. Get details

Never admit liability or offer payment without written consent from your insurer. Exchange details with all parties involved and if possible, note the following:

• Names and contact details of other drivers
• Vehicle registration numbers and insurer details for all vehicles involved
• Driving licence numbers

4. Take pictures

If it’s safe to do so, photograph the scene and any vehicle damage. Images serve as crucial evidence for insurers, so store them securely until your claim is resolved. If taking photos isn’t possible, draw a diagram with vehicle positions and damage. If your phone is damaged, ask a witness to capture images and send them to you. If you have dashcam footage, save and share it with your insurer.

5. Are there any witnesses?

Collect witness details, including name, phone number and address. Witness statements can provide valuable supporting evidence. Aim to gather as many independent witnesses as possible. In ‘cash-for-crash’ scams, some individuals could be involved, so obtaining multiple accounts helps protect you.

6. Report the incident

If possible, report the claim from the scene or within 24 hours of the incident by calling 01227 285540 (option 2). Our third-party claims handlers will take your details, inform your insurer and arrange a dual-controlled courtesy car if you’ve selected the Legal Cover Extension. If anyone is injured or you could not swap details at the scene, you must also report the incident to police within 24 hours.
